Train your dog to respond well to vet visits. Move your hands across his head, back, stomach and legs, and give him reinforcement when he responds appropriately. Help him become adjusted to having his paws and teeth examined. Consider asking your friends for help, as well.
When introducing your dog to another animal, do so slowly and carefully. Imagine the animal in your home already, before making the commitment to bringing another one home with you. You can boost bonding efforts by getting a new pet that has a complimentary personality to your own.
You can rest assured that when you train your puppy, they may have an accident in the house. If your puppy has an accident, clean it up straight away. If you don’t clean accidents up quickly, your pet may smell the mess and eliminate in the same spot again. You can buy a spray or carpet shampoo that will remove the odor. Dog training is big on making rules for the relationship just like you would with people, you will have such a better time with each other once the rules are in place. Remember that reinforcement is important if you want your dog to retain his new skills. Keep his memory crisp, and do not let any deviations from acceptable behavior slide through. After your dog has learned the basics, you can work together more effectively to instill more complex behaviors.
Big dogs that like to stretch out or lie on their backs need a big bed. You can give your dog a bed that is sized appropriately, or consider an unconventional bed for your dog, such as a crib mattress. This has a lot of advantages since you can change the cover on it easily and often by simply using fitted crib sheets. They’re waterproof, too! As you progress in training your dog, only give rewards for obedience the first time you give a command such as “come” or “sit”. The dog will quickly learn that it is better to get the reward by obeying the first command than having you repeat it and not give the reward. Do praise the dog when it finally obeys, but save the treats for quick obedience.
It is wise for all family members to be involved when it comes to training a new puppy or dog. If just one person does it, then the dog will be more inclined to only obey that one person. Having everyone do it, tells the dog that he must obey every member of the family. Be sure to be affectionate with your dog. When your dog exhibits the right behavior, reward it with positive attention. Also, give your dog praise when they follow your directions. This will make your dog happy, not to mention easier to train because he is in a good mood.
